Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation at The UVM Medical Center

A traumatic brain injury occurs when an impact to the head results in disruption of brain function and the brain is no longer able to function normally. This damage can be done from an auto accident, fall, sports related injury or other injury or assault. Other conditions that may cause brain injuries include brain tumors, hypoxia, infections of the brain or weakened vessels in the brain. These can result in problems with some or all of the following areas:

• Physical impairment
• Behavioral issues
• Cognitive issues
• Emotional issues
• Psychosocial issues
• Personality changes

Whatever the cause or severity of the brain injury, our goal is to get the person back to their life and family, as safely and independently as possible.

Our staff works closely as a team to develop a highly specialized program that is tailored to the unique problem of each person, with input from the patient and family. Treatment provided in the acute rehabilitation setting is based on the most current research for traumatic brain injury, using proven treatment techniques. We focus on using the brain's adaptive capacity, known as neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to reorganize itself and create new connections and strengthen remaining connections to maximize function.

The length of time a person can spend in rehabilitation depends on the severity of the injury, support available at discharge and the specific rehabilitation needs.

• Develop new cognitive and behavioral strategies to compensate for any deficits
• Improve physical mobility and function to return to performing daily activities with adaptive equipment as needed
• Overcome the psychological and social problems that can interfere with returning to life at home, work or in the community
