Our hand surgery and hand therapy team is the most experienced team in the region. We offer a wide variety of treatment options, ranging from hand therapy and rehabilitation to advanced minimally invasive surgical methods.

Hand Specialists: Meet Our Hand Surgeons

The University of Vermont Medical Center's team includes knowledgeable and caring board-certified hand surgeons and experienced nurses. Our hand surgeons are fellowship-trained and board certified with a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in Surgery of the Hand. This means you are receiving advanced orthopedic care from surgeons specializing in hand surgery at Burlington, Vermont's only academic medical center.

The UVM Medical Center hand surgeons will work with you to evaluate your condition and to determine what treatment best fits your goals and your lifestyle.

Hand and Wrist Pain: Conditions We Treat

At The UVM Medical Center, we understand the pain and frustration a hand injury can cause. Our goal is to get you back to doing the things you love and enjoying a healthy, active life—pain free. Our skilled team has years of experience treating hand injuries. Some of the hand injuries we treat include:

  • Acute hand injuries (fractures and sprains)
  • Lacerations requiring stitches or microsurgery
  • Tendon inflammation (tendonitis)

We offer a number of treatment options for hand pain. After a consultation with one of our specialists, we will create a personalized course of treatment for you.

If your pain is due to a hand injury (caused by sports or another activity), we may recommend:

  • In-depth hand rehabilitation therapy
  • Minimally invasive outpatient surgery

Hand Therapists at The UVM Medical Center

Each therapist of our hand therapy team is an occupational or physical therapist who has completed a minimum of five years of additional medical training experience in treating hand, wrist, finger and elbow injuries. Our eight hand therapists have more than 100 years of collective experience.

In addition, the majority of hand therapists in Burlington, Vermont are with The UVM Medical Center, allowing us to provide an unprecedented level of care to our patients.

Hand Surgery

The UVM Medical Center's Hand Surgery Program offers expert clinical care for all types of hand, finger and wrist injuries of all types. We evaluate you using the most advanced diagnostic equipment available, and our surgeons practice the latest research-based techniques. We are designed as a Level 1 Trauma Center, which means we are specialists in acute injury treatment. Our hand surgeons do it all, including:

  • Skin grafts
  • Microscopic nerve repair
  • Hand and finger reattachments

Hand Therapy at the UVM Medical Center: Centralized Care

Our Hand Therapy Program offers expert in-depth rehabilitative care for hand, finger and wrist injuries of all types. If you or a loved one is recovering from hand surgery or a serious hand injury, rehabilitation is a critical step in the healing process.

For your convenience, we have centralized our hand and wrist care. Now there's no need to go one place for your imaging scan and another place for your hand surgery and rehab. At Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, located on Tilley Drive in South Burlington, we have everything you need on site:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Outpatient surgeries
  • Rehabilitation

Hand Therapy: What to Expect

To create your individualized treatment plan, our hand therapists will first perform a comprehensive evaluation. Then, based on the evaluation and your input, we will develop a treatment plan that works for you.

Our hand therapists have experience working with different types of hand injuries and pain. Whether you had hand surgery or you suffer from chronic hand pain and arthritis, our hand therapists can find a treatment plan that's right for you.

Your individual treatment plan may include therapies to:

  • Increase range of motion and flexibility
  • Increase strength and function
  • Manage acute and chronic pain
  • Promote healing, surgical repair and wound desensitization
  • Continue therapy treatment plan at home

At The UVM Medical Center, you will find caring and skilled hand therapists, including rehab doctors trained in rehabilitation medicine, physical therapists and specialized rehabilitation nurses. We all work together to help you return to doing the things you enjoy.

You may also arrange an appointment with a hand surgeon at The University of Vermont Medical Center for an evaluation, consultation or second opinion with a referral from a primary care physician, another specialist such as a physiatrist, from self-referral or in follow-up from an emergency room visit. To arrange a hand therapy appointment, you need a referral from a hand surgeon.

If available, please bring any medical health records or diagnostic studies (X-rays, CT scans, MRI, EMG/NCS). This will assist our hand specialty team in developing a comprehensive plan of care for you. Please note that financial coverage for evaluation and treatment are subject to the conditions of your particular insurance policy.
