Learning to Drive Again

The ability to drive a motor vehicle is an important source of independence in our society. For a person with a disability or a medical condition, this kind of independence and freedom may seem out of reach.

At The University of Vermont Medical Center we can help you regain that independence. We provide the most comprehensive driving rehabilitation program in Vermont with services that meet the needs of individuals of all driving ages and abilities.

Driver Rehabilitation provides a thorough evaluation and appropriate treatment for people with conditions that may affect their ability to drive safely such as stroke, a traumatic injury or visual impairment.

Driver Rehabilitation at UVM Medical Center

We start by performing an in-depth clinical evaluation of your vision, thinking skills, and physical abilities. This allows us to understand the source of any problems that you may be having and decide if further testing or treatment is needed.

An on-road evaluation will be conducted when our clinicians decide you are safe to proceed. This evaluation is designed to assess your ability to handle the vehicle in a variety of traffic situations and determine if adaptive equipment or training is needed.

Who will perform the evaluations?

All our clinicians are licensed occupational therapists. The on-road evaluation and training is performed by Certified Driving Rehabilitation Specialists who are also Vermont Driving School Instructors.

What happens if I need training?

The occupational therapist will review your evaluation and work with you to develop an individualized program. We provide one-on-one treatment to help you reach your driving goals.

Will I need to bring my own car?

It may be necessary to have your car available. However, the on-road evaluation will take place in our driver rehabilitation car, which has an automatic transmission as well as an instructor's brake. You may need to bring a "coach" who must be a licensed driver over the age of 25.

How can I get an appointment?

An order from your medical provider for occupational therapy is required for the evaluation and program. Once you have this order, you can call our office at (802) 847-3140 and we will schedule an appointment for you.

Will the visit be covered by my insurance?

Insurance policies are all different. We can help you identify payment sources prior to your appointment. Please ask us about any concerns at the time you make your appointment.

Where is the Driver Rehabilitation Program located ?

The clinic is on the first floor, Suite 102, of the Medical Office Building on the Fanny Allen Campus of UVM Medical Center.

Do you have specialized driving programs ?
