President, Eileen Whalen, MHA, RN
Eileen Whalen, MHA, RN is President of The University of Vermont Medical Center.
Whalen has more than 35 years of experience in health care. She came to UVM Medical Center from Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, WA, where she served as the chief executive. Harborview is the largest public hospital in the State of Washington and an academic medical center part of the UW Medicine Network. Harborview is nationally known for trauma care and serves as the only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma and burn center for the states of Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.
Prior to taking the position at Harborview, she served as executive vice president at the University of Arizona Medical Center, Tucson, AZ. Whalen has also held numerous leadership positions in trauma, emergency and critical care services. She is a nationally recognized trauma systems expert and a founding member and past president of the Society of Trauma Nurses. Whalen also served as editor, Journal of Trauma Nursing from 1993-2006.
Whalen is a graduate of Niagara University, Niagara Falls, NY, where she received a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing. She also holds a Master in Health and Hospital Administration degree from Chapman University, Sacramento, CA.
Chief Executive Officer, John Brumsted, MD
John R. Brumsted, MD, is Chief Executive Officer of The University of Vermont Medical Center, as well as President and Chief Executive Officer of The University of Vermont Health Network.
A more-than 30-year veteran of the organization, Dr. Brumsted has served in a number of roles at The UVM Medical Center, including president and chief executive officer, chief medical officer, chief quality officer and an appointment as interim CEO.
He also has served as a senior associate dean for Clinical Affairs at The UVM College of Medicine, and medical director of The Vermont Health Plan (TVHP) and Vermont Managed Care (VMC). He has been a member of The UVM Medical Center medical staff since 1985, and has practiced medicine at The UVM Medical Center since 1981 when he began as a resident at the then Medical Center Hospital of Vermont.
Dr. Brumsted received his Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Dartmouth College and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School in 1978. He completed a surgical internship at Hartford Hospital, Hartford, CT, in 1979. He subsequently served in the U.S. Public Health Service in Randolph, New York for two years prior to moving to Vermont to complete his residency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine between 1981- 1985.
He completed a fellowship in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at The UVM Medical Center in 1987, within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. He is a member of The UVM Medical Center's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is a tenured professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
Dr. Brumsted is currently a member of the Vermont Medical Society (VMS) Council and served as its president from 2008-2009. He is the current Chair of the VMS Research and Education Foundation Board. He has published extensively, both nationally and regionally.
Dr. Brumsted lives with his family in Shelburne, Vermont. He is a native of Ithaca, New York.
