Contact Lens Care: 5 Tips All Contact Lens Wearers Should Follow
Most of us don’t think about the health of our eyes on a daily basis. However, if you’re a contact lens wearer, there are important things to know. Learn more from Jessica J. McNally, MD, from the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Although contact lenses are a convenient and effective way to see more clearly, wearers are more susceptible to eye infections. They may also suffer from other conditions such as contact lens overwear.
To reduce the risk of complications, make sure to follow your eye doctor’s advice about contact lens wear and hygiene. Care recommendations may vary from one lens to another. General rules of thumb are:
- Wear the contact lenses for the amount of time as your doctor recommends
- Dispose of contacts at the appropriate time
- Make sure to follow your eye doctor’s cleaning recommendations
- Use only approved contact lens solutions
- Avoid contact with water
Most importantly, if your eye becomes red or uncomfortable, remove the contact and call your eye doctor. Have an updated pair of glasses available in case you have a problem and need to stay out of your contacts for any length of time.
