Urology Residency Research Program
The Division of Urology at UVM is focused on research efforts in addition to the wide range of clinical activity. Both clinical and bench research projects are available and residents are encouraged and required to participate. We stress the research process, development of research questions, and ownership of one's work over task work and number of publications. Due to the small size and close interaction with faculty, residents are able and encouraged to come up with research questions that interest them.
Much of the research since the start of the residency has focused on clinical outcomes. Kidney stone databases have been created to look at surgical outcomes, imaging techniques, stone composition, and post-operative strategies to improve stent morbidity. Prostate cancer databases have been established to assess robotic outcomes, impact of MRI imaging, and PSA screening practices. BPH projects include outcomes with thulium laser vaporization as well as participation in clinical trials looking at novel surgical interventions (Aqua ablation). In addition, access to a clinical lab and animal studies has looked at bladder behavior, novel products for incontinence, and more recently evaluating an animal model of obesity and infertility. As part of the University of Vermont Cancer Center, we are actively involved in many ongoing clinical trials and the opportunity exists to collaborate with our medical and radiation colleagues on this front.
Our approach to resident participation in research is interactive and self-driven while remaining involved and supportive. Many residents have had projects accepted and presented at regional and national conferences. We continue to have our work published in peer reviewed journals. Our list of ongoing projects continues to grow and we look forward to having a new member take part and contribute to our many successes.
