- Residency applications are submitted via Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)
- The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at UVM Medical Center participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)
- We encourage submission prior to the ERAS application opening date, as we start to review applications immediately. We require complete applications by October 15 to allow us time to give all applications full review. If there is a delay in obtaining your application materials, such as letters of recommendation, you should email our Program Administrator after October 16, so that your application can be reviewed again with complete information.
- Invitations to interview are emailed via Thalamus.
- When interview invitations are sent, unless otherwise noted, applicants will have 72 hours to accept or decline.
- All interviews will be conducted virtually again this year.
Materials required from all applicants:
- Application through ERAS
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal Statement
- Dean's Letter, or MSPE
- Transcripts
- A minimum of three (3) recent letters of reference from direct supervisors. At least one SLOE is required, but two is preferred.
- We do not currently require USMLE Step 2 for a complete application. However, we feel that a Step 2 score is a helpful piece of information for the selection committee to have access to, especially prior to final ranking.
Our approach to application review:
- All applications are reviewed by our Program Leadership and our Application Review Committee, and this committee together selects applicants to invite for interviews. All members participate voluntarily in training on Mitigating Bias through our Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
- Our program aims to follow the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM) Application Process Improvement Committee (APIC) Best Practices for the Residency Application and Interview Season. The UVM EM Residency Program will participate in Program Signaling for the 2023 interview season.
- Last year, consistent with recommendations from the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD-EM) organization, applicants were instructed by our UVM program that if they rotated with us, they should NOT send us a signal. We explained that their interest in our program was implied and that a signal would not be necessary.
- This year, the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), CORD-EM, and other emergency medicine program leaders have decided to (1) increase the number of program signals from five to seven, and (2) instruct applicants to send a signal to any program in which they are genuinely interested, regardless of whether they have performed a rotation there or not. This change was made in order to align with the AAMC’s guidance, reduce confusion across all of the participating specialties, and minimize inequality towards applicants without access to a home program or external rotation opportunities.
- The UVM EM Residency Program, in support of equity and inclusion, will therefore acknowledge the recommendations made by the AAMC and follow the guidance provided by CORD’s Application Process Improvement Committee, which recommends that students distribute their seven signals to programs in which they are most interested, regardless of whether they performed a rotation at that program.
- We ask that students please keep in mind that Program Signals will only be used during the application review process to help allocate limited interview slots to applicants most interested in our program.
- Program Signals will not be used in ranking applicants for the match at the UVM EM Residency Program.
- In prior years, all applicants to our program who have rotated with us and successfully completed the expectations of the rotation have been granted an interview with our program.
International applicants must:
- Have a J-1 Visa or have a U.S. citizen Permanent Resident status. No other Visas will be accepted. (H1B are not acceptable.)
- Have graduated from medical school within the last two years.
- Have a current certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
- Successfully completed the Clinical Skills requirement.
- Have worked in clinical medicine in the United States within the last two years.
- NOTE: an observership does not fulfill this requirement.
Interview Day and Follow-Up
- Interviews are generally scheduled on Wednesdays and Fridays from October to December. Space is limited so please respond as soon as possible to emails regarding interview scheduling.
- We will have morning and afternoon sessions on interview days with each lasting about 4-5 hours. The day will include a welcome session with our Program Leadership and a combination of individual interviews with faculty and panel interviews with residents and staff.
- Our chief residents will host a series of virtual “happy hours” for applicants who are invited to interview at our program to provide an opportunity to get to know our incredible group of residents and ask questions.
- We will likely hold “second look” (first look for some) events in the greater Burlington area in January or February of 2024 after our rank list has been submitted through the NRMP. Location and dates TBD, but info will be sent to those applicants who interview at our program.
