The General Surgery Residency didactic program is strictly protected time for resident learning and includes a multitude of conferences specific to the rotations.

Residency Curriculum Clinical Rotations 

The General Surgery Residency program includes five clinical years and a research year between the clinical G2 and G3 years.  

Clinical Year One

The first clinical year rotations are on the following surgery services: 

  • General Surgery 
  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Combined Surgical Oncology & Plastic Surgery
  • Combined Pediatric & Transplant Surgery  
  • Acute Care Surgery
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit 
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Emergency Surgical Service

Clinical Year Two

Rotations in the second year include: 

  • General Surgery
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Combined Surgical Oncology & Plastic Surgery
  • Acute Care Surgery
  • Combined Pediatric & Transplant Surgery  
  • Rural Rotation Surgical Hospital
  • Vascular Surgery 
  • Emergency Surgical Service 

Research Year

A year is spent in Surgical Research between the second and third clinical years. 

Clinical Year Three

During the third clinical year the resident gains further experience in: 

  • Acute Care Surgery
  • General Surgery 
  • Endoscopy and Advanced Laparoscopy Surgery 
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Combined Surgical Oncology & Plastic Surgery
  • Combined Pediatric & Transplant Surgery  
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Emergency Surgical Service 

Clinical Year Four

Residents in the fourth clinical year spend four months as chief resident in:

  • Cardiothoracic Surgery
  • Combined Pediatric & Transplant Surgery  
  • Emergency Surgical Service 

Clinical Year Five

The final clinical year is devoted to serving as chief resident on three general surgery services: 

  • General Surgery 
  • Combined Surgical Oncology & Plastic Surgery
  • Acute Care Surgery

Surgery Location

The general surgery residency clinical training occurs at the Medical Center Campus in Burlington, Vermont with some ambulatory surgery experience at the Fanny Allen Campus, three miles to the east. One month rotation in the PGY-2 year and 2 months in the PGY-4 year are spent at the Central Vermont Medical Center campus located in Berlin, VT approximately 45 miles from the main campus.
