A note from a former resident, Anthony Dinizio, to residency applicants, about his experience at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Dear Applicant,
I hope the interview season continues to go well for you. I was in your position a few short years ago and I remember how both exciting and stressful the residency interview process could be. On the one hand, you will travel to places you've never visited and form friendships with other applicants that may last for life. On the other hand, the constant travel can become tiresome and the amount of mental energy required to remain focused during interview days is substantial.
I want to let you know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. When all is said and done, you will open an envelope on Match Day and all of the stress of the interview season will give way to elation and anticipation of what the future will bring. When I opened my envelope and found out that I would be spending four years at the University of Vermont Medical Center for my radiology training, I couldn't have been happier. It's a feeling that has stayed with me ever since. Of course, one size does not fit all when it comes to residency, but please allow me to tell you why I could not see myself at any program other than UVM.
First, the day-to-day work environment here is exceptional. The attending physicians are universally friendly and encouraging, and the support staff are always patient and happy to help the residents. A strong sense of community exists at UVM, whether it be in the setting of the formal departmental events held every few months, or the weekly trivia night held at a local bar, frequented by both residents, and attending's alike. Moreover, there are strong friendships between the residents, which extend outside of the hospital, leading to a sense of camaraderie which I think is crucial during the sometimes-stressful time of residency.
Second, the resident-friendly atmosphere at UVM cannot be overstated. Teaching occurs at the workstation and during our excellent twice-daily didactic lectures. There are few fellows here to stand between you and interesting cases or procedures. The book fund is extremely generous and residents are rewarded for their scholarly pursuits and research projects. Scheduling vacation days is simple and can usually be done even on short notice. Our equipment at UVM is state of the art. As you tour the facilities of other institutions, I encourage you to be mindful of the quality of the audiovisual equipment in the conference rooms and inquire about the specifications of the various types of scanners throughout the department. You will be hard-pressed to find a program with a more impressive array of technology than UVM.
Finally, there is a level of balance at UVM that I'm not sure many other programs can rival. If you plan on a career in private practice (a goal which is encouraged, not looked negatively upon), you will obtain the skills needed to function independently on call and render efficient, accurate interpretations. On the other hand, if you would like to pursue a career in academic medicine, there are limitless research opportunities available to you, as well as world-renowned experts in their respective fields.
In sum, I hope you came away from your day at UVM just as excited as I was when I interviewed here. Matching here has been one of the best things to happen to me and I honestly cannot imagine myself doing my residency anywhere else. I wish you the best of luck as you finish the interview season.
