UVM Medical Center
UVM Medical Center is a 450-bed academic health center affiliated with the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, located in Burlington, VT. UVM Medical Center is comprised of two main campuses: The Medical Center Campus and the University Health Center Campus. The hospital and the College of Medicine are physically connected on the Medical Center Campus, overlooking downtown Burlington, Lake Champlain, and New York's Adirondack Mountains. The Inpatient Psychiatry Units, the Emergency Department, and the Psychiatric Consultation Service are all located in the Medical Center, as are the medicine, pediatrics, and neurology inpatient units.
Medical Center Campus - The Inpatient Psychiatry Unit
Built in 2005, the Inpatient Psychiatry Units are a state-of the-art facility comprised of 28 beds distributed on two floors. Admissions to each unit are determined, in-part, by legal status of a patient, their acuity, and primary diagnoses. The less acute unit is located on the 3rd floor of the Shepardson wing and accepts mostly voluntary admissions. The more acute unit, equipped with a secure entrance and seclusion rooms, is located on the 6th floor of the Shepardson wing and accepts both voluntary and involuntary admissions. We recently outfitted both units with patient exercise rooms and both units have well-equipped resident workroom spaces and ample staff conference rooms.
The Psychiatric Consultation Service
The Psychiatric Consultation Service is located in the hospital on the 4th floor of the Patrick wing. Residents, medical students, and psychiatry attendings meet here daily to round on new and follow-up consultations. In addition, the weekend call team congregates here for morning sign-out. Psychiatry Consultation faculty also oversee the neuro-stimulation service at UVMMC, which offers Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
University Health Center Campus
The University Health Center Campus (UHC) houses several outpatient clinics and is located at 1 South Prospect Street, two blocks west of the hospital through the UVM campus.
The Department of Psychiatry is located on the 6th floor along with numerous subspecialty clinics, including the Adult Psychiatry Clinic, the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit, the Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic, the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic, and the Seneca Center. The Vermont Center for Children, Youth, & Families is located on the 3rd floor, while the Substance Use Treatment Center (Day One, Buprenorphine, and Methadone clinics) is split between the 1st and 3rd floors.
Community Mental Health Centers
The Psychiatry Residency Program is affiliated with three local community mental health centers: Howard Center, Northwest Counseling and Support Services, and Washington County Mental Health) all within forty-five minutes of the main teaching facility. Each center provides full spectrum outpatient, emergency, and residential treatment for a designated regional population. All general track residents are required to spend one day per week at a CMHC where they are supervised individually by a psychiatrist. Residents carry their own patients, consult on new patients and perform outreach visits. The patient population at each CMHC may or may not be "case managed" and generally suffers from a chronic and persistent psychiatric condition requiring multiple medications and social and psychological support.
Burlington Lakeside VA Clinic (BLC) and White River Junction VA Medical Center (WRJ VAMC)
The White River Junction (WRJ) Healthcare System is a level 2 tertiary care system providing a wide range of inpatient and outpatient health services to approximately 25,000 Veterans across Vermont and the four contiguous counties of New Hampshire. The WRJVA MC is located in the town of White River Junction, Vermont, and operates outpatient clinics in five Vermont locations: Burlington, Bennington, Brattleboro, Newport, and Rutland; and three New Hampshire communities: Keene, Littleton and Colebrook.
The Burlington Lakeside VA Clinic (BLC) is one of the Community-Based Outpatient Clinic of the White River Junction VA. Located in Burlington about 15 minutes from UVMMC, the BLC offers a wide variety of services to military veterans including Primary Care, Mental Health, Audiology, Cardiology, Sleep Medicine, and Physical Therapy. The BLC is a primary outpatient psychiatry training site for PGY3 and 4. In the PGY4 year, the VA walk-in clinic is one of our Consult to Primary care sites.
The WRJ VA Medical Center is a 74-bed, acute care facility that provides a full range of primary, secondary, and specialty care. All PGY2 residents do a one-month rotation at the Residential Recovery Center (a 14 bed Substance Abuse Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program) where they obtain training in treatment of veterans with Substance Use Disorders. For the month, residents travel 1.5 hours two times a week to the WRJ VA while also working in the BLC VA office and attending didactics via a remote connection.
Butabika and Mulago Hospitals, Kampala Uganda
Residents have the option to spend a month in Uganda in their PGY2 year on our Global Mental Health rotation. On this rotation, residents see patients at the largest free-standing psychiatric hospital in Uganda, Butabika hospital (400 beds, 20 miles outside of Kampala) and in the outpatient clinic at Mulago hospital in Kampala, the primary teaching hospital for Makerere University.
**Since the academic year 2021-22, this rotation has been suspended due to COVID-19 safety risks. We hope to resume our Global Mental Health Rotation in 2023.
Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital (elective site)
The Vermont Psychiatric Care Hospital (VPCH) is the 25 bed state hospital. It was built in 2014 after flooding from Hurricane Irene in 2007 destroyed the state’s original state hospital in Waterbury. Located in Berlin Vermont, a 40-minute drive from Burlington, VPCH is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to improving the health and well-being of one of Vermont’s most vulnerable populations. Based on the recovery focus model of care, the design of the hospital includes well-designed yards, half basketball court, planting beds, jogging track, labyrinth, and other unique landscaping details. Some interior aesthetics include a library, a greenhouse, a large activity room, and a fitness room. Patients are encouraged to engage in activities and participate in all aspects of prescribed treatment to facilitate recovery.
