PGY-1

A year of Internal Medicine is required prior to commencing neurologic training. This year should encompass a broad experience in general internal medicine and comply with ACGME requirements. We offer four categorical positions, with the preliminary year being completed at the UVM Medical Center's Department of Internal Medicine. A separate applicaton is not required.

PGY-2

(First Year of Neurology Training)

  • Three months are spent on the Inpatient, Subspecialty Neurology Team.
  • Three to four blocks of night float (blocks are 2 weeks)
  • Three to four blocks of outpatient, subspecialty neurology (blocks are 2 weeks)
  • One month of Clinical Neurophysiology
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • One month of Neuroradiology
  • One month of Psychiatry

PGY-3

(Second Year of Neurology Training)

  • Three months are spent on the Acute, Interventional Neurology Team
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • Three to four blocks of night float (blocks are 2 weeks)
  • Three to four blocks of outpatient, subspecialty neurology (blocks are 2 weeks)
  • Remainder of the year is elective

PGY-4

(Third Year of Neurology Training)

  • Three months are spent as Ward Chief Resident
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • Remainder of the year is elective

Throughout the residency, residents are required to attend a weekly continuity clinic. We require that all residents, during the course of their training, complete the following electives: Neuropathology, Neuromuscular disease, Epilepsy, Neuro-immunology and Movement Disorders. The sequence these are completed depends on the individual interests of each resident. We stress early exposure to the multiple subspecialties of neurology.

Night float runs from 7PM-7AM Sunday thru Friday. Weekends are covered in 12 hour blocks. PGY-2's & PGY-3's share this responsibility.
